Food Contact 101 provides a practical introduction to the regulations governing materials and articles that come into contact with food—including packaging, processing equipment, kitchenware, coatings, adhesives, and other components. The course begins with the purpose of food contact regulation and the essential terminology used throughout the industry. It then examines the principal regulatory frameworks in the United States, European Union, China, and MERCOSUR, highlighting important differences in how substances, materials, finished articles, migration, and safety are evaluated. Learners will also explore real-world compliance considerations, including intended conditions of use, supplier documentation, migration testing, risk assessment, chemicals of concern, sustainability expectations, and communication across the supply chain. By the end of the course, participants will have a clearer understanding of the information, evaluations, and practical steps needed to support the safe and compliant introduction of food contact products into global markets.
